The Preikestolen hike
Preikestolen is a flat-topped cliff 604 metres above the Lysefjord, reached by a well-marked mountain trail. It is one of the most photographed places in Norway and, on a summer day, one of the busiest. Sleeping four kilometres from the trailhead lets you beat the crowds.

Start early
The buses and the day-trippers from Stavanger reach the trail between 9 and 11 in the morning. Leave the campsite at 6 or 7 and you will have the cliff to yourself, with the light on the fjord at its best.
The trail
The path is well marked and built up with stone steps and boardwalks, but it is a mountain trail: steep in places, uneven, and slippery when wet. Sturdy shoes, a rain jacket and a warm layer are a must in every season. Bring water and food; there is nothing to buy after the car park.
There are no fences at the edge. Keep children close and dogs on a leash.
Weather
The weather changes quickly. In fog the view is gone and the edge is dangerous; in winter and early spring the upper part can be icy, and a guided hike is the sensible choice. Check the forecast on yr.no before you go, and ask at reception.
